Cinderford United 7 Ampthill II 36
The game started with some early pressure from Ampthill with a try disallowed before Cinderford cleared their lines, but a lost line-out led to an unconverted try for the visitor’s winger Ben Calder. A few minutes later Cinderford came back into the game with a try scored and converted by Ben McIlwraith following a kick ahead and chase. Ampthill pressed again and gained a penalty which although Cinderford had defended very well they were undone by a chip over the top and the try and conversion was made by fly-half Josh Sharp. Cinderford pressed very hard for the remainder of the half but were held up over the line, leaving the half time score at 7 – 12.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first half with a lot of Ampthill pressure and Sharp scored and converted his second try. The referee was finding the going difficult and soon a flair-up resulted in a yellow card for Cinderford’s Toby Powell and a red card for Ampthill’s Simon Pitfield. Thereafter the game got away from the referee a little and Cinderford’s Aaron Ryan was yellow carded for ‘a team offence’. The United then had a series of penalties awarded against them and Calder went over for his second try which Sharp converted. From the re-start Ampthill regained the ball and ran through some uncharacteristic slack defending for Calder to get his ‘hat-trick’ which was also converted. Cinderford were again continuously penalised until Sharp successfully kicked at goal to leave the final score 7-36.
