Cinderford took a huge stride towards securing the National 2 (South) title when they beat Redruth at the Recreation Ground for the first time, scoring 17 unanswered points in the second-half and extending their winning run to 21 games.
In a very closely fought first-half the defences of both teams were to the fore but it was the league leaders who opened the scoring after 27 minutes when winger Reuben Norville was quickly through on James Moffat’s well judged kick to score a try, which Moffat converted. The home side responded well and their livewire scrum-half Jack Oulton twisted out of an attempted tackle to score, with Richard Kevern converting to level it at 7-7 and the score remained unchanged at the interval.
Cinderford made the perfect start to the second half when centre Ed Bogue cut through to score, with Moffat adding the conversion. Soon afterwards the visitors almost scored again, but No8 George Evans was denied by a last-ditch tackle that saw him loose possession over the try line. Pressure on the home scrummage then saw Cinderford awarded a penalty 40m out and Moffat was on target with his kick at goal after 54 minutes.
As the game went into it’s closing stages it was visiting outside-half Liam Hemming who produced a moment of magic to put the result beyond doubt when he stepped through the Redruth defence to score his team’s third try, which Moffat again converted.
