Former captain of Cinderford RFC Mike Wilcox (29) has been appointed vice-captain of Cinderford RFC for the 2020-21 season. He will serve under newly appointed captain Harry Hone following George Porter’s decision to stand down after 4 seasons. Wilcox was captain of Cinderford for 2 seasons from 2014-2016 during his first stint at the Forester’s during which he played over 150 times for the 1st XV.. Following Cinderford’s relegation from National One at the end of the 2015-16 season Wilcox joined Hartpury RFC and was part of the Hartpury side that won National One in 2016-17 without losing a game. For the past three seasons Wilcox, primarily a full back but also an experienced fly half, has been a part of Hartpury’s Championship squad
Mike has played in two National County Under 20’s finals, at Twickenham, for Gloucestershire – captaining them to the title in 2011. Mike has also played, and captained, Gloucestershire in the senior County Championship on numerous occasions. Mike has also played and toured with the senior England Counties team.
Cinderford RFC Director of Rugby, Paul Morris, commented “Mike is the right choice as vice-captain for the new season. He’s experienced, knowledgeable and respected by the management group and players alike. He will compliment Harry Hone’s qualities and together they will be a strong leadership duo within our playing group. We need to hit the ground running if the 2020-21 season is a shortened version and having an energetic leadership group of players will be vital to doing this. Harry and Mike will be vital to this.”
Mike Wilcox said “I’ve already said that I’m excited to be back at Cinderford and that I can’t wait to get started. This appointment only adds to that excitement. I’m delighted in the faith and trust shown in me by the management group. I look forward to supporting Harry and the players in our desire to be the best we can be in the coming season.”
