Cinderford made it four wins in a row in National 2 West, with an excellent victory at Macclesfield, as 14 points from the boot of Luke McMahon proved crucial to their success.
It was the home side who made all the early running, and they took the lead after 12 minutes with a try from centre Harry Oliver, which he also converted. Cinderford responded when Nathan Taylor was driven over from a lineout catch and drive, before the home side scored their second try through prop Andy Darlington, which Oliver converted. As half-time approached the visitors camped themselves on their opponents try-line and winger Sam Smith went over for a try, which McMahon converted to make it 14-12 to Macclesfield at the interval.
Pressure on the home scrummage saw Cinderford take the lead for the first time early in the second half, when McMahon landed a penalty. Back came Macclesfield however and they re-took the lead when winger Jamie Harrison scored an unconverted try. McMahon made a one-point game at 19-18, when he landed his second penalty after 55 minutes. As the game went into its closing stages it was Cinderford who started to get on top and sustained pressure near their opponent’s line resulted in a couple of penalties being awarded, which McMahon successfully landed to earn his team a victory.
