Professional rugby league is set to return to the Forest of Dean on Sunday September 6th at 3pm when Gloucestershire All Golds entertain one of Yorkshire’s grandest old clubs, Keighley Cougars. The venue is Cinderford’s very own Beavis Memorial ground, Dockham Road.
The All Golds’ usually play their home games at Cheltenham’s Prince of Wales stadium but due to an ever growing interest in the team in the West of Gloucestershire area, the club has decided to play their last League 1 home fixture of the 2015 season in Cinderford.
The 13 aside code has welcomed many top players from the region over the last century and this enduring link continues to this day with the recent formation of Forest Bulldogs who plan to enter the West of England division in 2016.
All Golds President Lionel Hurst is looking forward to the game. He said: “Cinderford is a famous name in rugby union and moreover has a history of producing some of rugby league’s finest players. Keighley are hoping to win Kingstone Press League 1 and the All Golds are assembling a fine young side so the knowledgeable local rugby audience is in for a treat. At those prices how can you resist?! ”
And with ticket prices set at just £5 with Cinderford RFC Season Ticket holders getting free entry along with under 16s a great crowd is expected at Dockham Road.
All Golds Head Coach Lee Greenwood shares Hurst’s enthusiasm for the game. The former Super League star said: “This is a great opportunity for us as a club but also the game in general to attract new supporters. We are only in our 3rd season of professional rugby league and we hope to improve each year on and off the field. It would be fantastic to see a big crowd for the game and I’m sure the players from both teams will respond with an entertaining 80 minutes. ”
Cinderford RFC Chairman Rob Worgan said: “We are delighted to welcome the All Golds to the Beavis Memorial Ground. Our close relationship continues to develop and I believe all fans can expect to enjoy a traditional Forest welcome.”
