Cinderford eventually proved to be too strong for a bold Devonport Services side in a frantic 10 try-filled match.
The home side were first to score with winger Elliott Southworth touching down in the corner inside four minutes. After enduring a lengthy defensive stint, Cinderford’s patience was rewarded with a McMahon penalty.
The scoring spree then began. Cinderford’s Ben Carpenter pounced on a loose ball off the restart and the ball was flung wide once more for Sam Smith to score. The visitors responded just before the half hour mark when Tom Davies intercepted a looping pass and ran it in from 40 meters out. Cinderford reacted well as Hugo Murray’s strong line sliced through the Devonport defence with conviction to add another for the home side. The tries kept coming, this time from Devonport. Mike Hunt and captain Matt Gregory scored to keep the visitors in the contest, making it 22-19 at the interval.
However, Cinderford regained control in the second half with two tries from driving mauls. George Knowles and Nathan Taylor scores were separated by another successful McMahon penalty to stretch their lead to 18 points. The home side added another despite being down to 14 men with McMahon topping off his impressive afternoon with a try, which he also converted. Davies scored again on full time to give Devonport a consolation bonus point and conclude the scoring in this entertaining encounter.
