Cinderford Stags kicked off 2024 with a commanding 36-12 victory against Cheltenham Tigers.
The Stags dominated early on, with Tom Ward spotting space down the blindside setting up Ethan Hopkins for the first try in the corner. Although the conversion was missed, Cinderford continued their momentum, as Jay Watkins’ clever chip allowed Adam Evans to score their second try. The conversion was once again off the mark, putting Cinderford ahead 0-10.
Cheltenham fought back, but Cinderford’s resilient defence, thwarted their efforts. Reuben Hinds added to the Stags’ tally with a third try, and Adam Evans showcased his brilliance, running in from the halfway line to extend the lead to 22-0 at halftime. The second half saw Cinderford’s James Kear add to the scoreboard, scoring their fifth try under the posts after picking up from the base of the scrum, with Paddy Hinds converting to make it 0-29.
Cheltenham responded with a solo effort from their winger, scoring their first try of the half, but Cinderford’s captain, Liam Littleton, ensured a decisive victory with another try under the posts after running a brilliant short line off the shoulder of Fly half Brett Turner, converted by Brett Turner for a 5-36 lead.
As fitness levels came into play, Cheltenham managed to score one more try, and the game concluded with a 36-12 victory for Cinderford. The team displayed outstanding performance, setting a strong tone for the rest of the season. Gratitude was extended to Cheltenham for their hospitality, with anticipation for returning the favour.
