Cinderford U14’s win County Cup

Cinderford U14’s triumphed in the County Cup finals at Hartpury on Sunday 24th April in fine style against Old Richians. The route to the final was a hard one for the Cinderford U14’s as reigning champions Bredon Star were in the same pool. However, the Cinderford boys put in some excellent performances, only letting one try in against them in all 3 pool games. Cinderford then came across some very strong teams in the quarter and semi finals but with a great style of running rugby Cinderford U14’s beat a good Cleve team 36 points to nil playing at Cleve in the quarters. This earned the Cinderford lads a home semi final against Clifton where they won 57 – 17. This was the most points against them that Cinderford U14’s have let in all season and this goes to show the level that they have been playing at this year.

This set up nicely the final at Hartpury against Old Richians, who also deserved their place in the final on merit and also play an excellent brand of rugby. The Cinderford boys had been waiting for this day for a long time and in front of a great crowd put on an excellent show of running open play. There were 3 try’s in the first half for Cinderford with no reply from Old Richians leaving the half time score at 15 points to nil. Old Richians started the second half looking to fight back but Cinderford scored again after about 3 minutes putting the score at 20 points to nil. There was then a nervy 10 minutes where Cinderford seemed to lose their shape and Old Richians took advantage of the situation and scored 2 try’s in quick succession, converting one of them to leave the score at 20 points to 12. To make matters worse Cinderford then had a yellow card for a high tackle. With Old Richians on the ascendancy and Cinderford down to 14 men this could easily be the turning point of the game. However, the Cinderford lads woke up again and scored 3 more try’s, converting one of them in a display that had everyone in the crowd in awe of them. It was a find display of running rugby that is rarely seen at this level and just goes to show the level of skill in all positions in the U14’s team. Every player from 1 to 18 put in a huge performance on the day.

Try’s scored by Robbie Winman, Matty Jones, Will Ruck and Jamie Morris. Conversions by Zac Littlefair.
