Match Report

After back-to-back lacklustre defeats Cinderford started this game with much more promise, and finished the stronger, but fell to their third successive defeat against a very well organised Macclesfield side.

Cinderford’s forwards coach Lee Fortey said afterwards: “We are disappointed to lose this match after such a good start. We lost our way in the middle of the game and coughed up too much ball, however the way we finished gives us encouragement to go away next week to high flying Fylde, in what will sure to be a very difficult match”.

As early as the first minute winger Lloyd Stapleton went over in the corner, only to be adjudged to have put his foot in touch. In the fourth minute full-back Mike Wilcox joined the line at pace with two clever sidesteps, burst clear then offloaded to winger Rob Winchle who was in acres of space and went over unopposed, converted by Teague.

After 10 min Macclesfield hacked the ball downfield and a cruel bounce which wrong footed Winchle went straight into the grateful hands of centre Richard Hughes who went over the line, converted by Ross Winney.

Macclesfield scored a second try of the game after 20 minutes, scored by prop Will Robinson. Cinderford replied on 23 min with a penalty by Teague after ill discipline by Macclesfield who were marched back 20 m to just outside their own 22.

Five minutes before half-time Macclesfield again got the rub of the green with another wicked bounce which went straight into the hands of second row Alan Marsh who crashed over under the posts, converted by Winney to bring the score to Cinderford 10 Macclesfield 19.

Cinderford started the second half the stronger, two great breaks by centre Simeon James were thwarted both times by good defence by the Macclesfield back line. On 51 min Cinderford’s number eight George Evans broke from the back of a ruck on the halfway line, going down the blindside and running in a 40 metre try.

On 57 min Macclesfield winger Jack Moorhouse cut a breathtaking line and ran in under the posts, converted by Winney to put Macclesfield 26-15 in front. 4 min later full-back Edward Stobart got in on the act and crossed the whitewash to put Macclesfield 31-15 up.

On 70 min came the try of the match Wilcox broke from his own 5 metre line to reach the halfway line, passed to Teague who then miss passed to Done. Done came back inside to Teague who then offloaded to Winchle who dived over out wide on the touch line.

Cinderford continued to press for the remainder of the game but were unable to find the killer pass or break which would have gave them their fourth try and losing bonus point which is what they deserved from this game.
