After the washout at Painswick last week, Cinderford visited Chosen Hill and played two games on Sunday 6 December.  The games were evenly contested, but slightly stronger Chosen Hill came out on top in both.

With the weather conditions making it very wet underfoot, plenty of handling errors were made with a wet ball.  In the first game Lewis Mason scored a solitary try for Cinderford, with Harry Taylor scoring in the second game.

Throughout both games Cinderford tried very hard and worthy of particular mention are William Salter, Fenn Edwards and Max Skipsey.

Cinderford U9’s Squad: Harrison Peates, Edwin Mathieson, Caleb Whitmore, Scott Hodder, Jack Worgan, Lydia Handley, Harry Taylor, Max Skipsey, William Salter, Emily Dalrymple, Lewis Mason and William Salter

Cinderford U9’s vs Drybrook

On Sunday 15 November, Cinderford played two games against Drybrook.  The sides were very evenly contested with the difference between the sides being the referee, who being the Cinderford coach was probably harder on his own team!  Drybrook won both games by three tries to two.

In the first game, Cinderford won the toss and decided to play down the hill.  Cinderford had Drybrook under pressure for a large proportion of the half, but Drybrooks defence was strong.  Towards the end of the half Drybrook made a couple of excursions up the hill to score two tries.

In the second half Cinderford made four changes to ensure all played and they soon equalised through tries from Jack Worgan and Harrison Peates.  Caleb Whitmore made some strong runs through the middle of Drybrooks defence to set up good field position.  Late on, Drybrook scored their winning try as Cinderfords defence was stretched committing too many to a maul.

The second game saw Cinderford exert good pressure on Drybrook and take a two tries to nil lead by half time.  Scott Hodder and Jack Worgan scoring for Cinderford.  With more changes at half time, Cinderford looked a little disorganised and Drybrook cam back into the game with two tries.  The Cinderford players disputed the second try after a magnificent tackle by Michael Saunders, they thought the ball had been dropped over the line.  Without a fourth official and video playback the referee gave the benefit of the doubt to Drybrook.

Late on a scrum to Drybrook was awarded in their own half.  Winning the scrum the Drybrook scrum half scampered down the blind side to score the winning try.

Worthy of a mention for Cinderford are William Salter and Lewis Mason who played exceptionally well.

Cinderford U9’s Squad: Harrison Peates, Edwin Mathieson, Caleb Whitmore, Scott Hodder, Jack Worgan, Lydia Handley, Harry Jones, Riley Baldwin, Lewis Handley, Max Skipsey, William Salter, Michael Saunders, Lewis Mason

Tewkesbury Under 9’s vs Cinderford Under 9’s

Played at ‘The Moats’ Tewkesbury, Cinderford played two games of twenty minutes (ten minutes each way).

Cinderford started like demons and soon had Tewkesbury under a lot of pressure.  Defensively, Cinderford were playing their best of the season so far.  First to score was centre Lydia Handley who led the way with some fearless tackling.  A ball went loose, for Lydia to gather and score in the corner.  Fly half Harry Taylor was next to score weaving his way to the line through a number of Tewkesbury defenders.  Jack Worgan scored next from the scrum half position before Harry Taylor scored a second.  At half time Cinderford were 20 points to nil ahead.  Throughout the first half the Cinderford nine were excellent with forwards Caleb Whitmore and Fenn Edwards and Scott Hodder standing out.

Cinderford made four changes in the second half bringing on a new set of forwards in Harrison Peates, Ben Jones and Riley Baldwin.  Lewis Mason replaced winger Max Skipsey.  Tewkesbury too made some changes and the second half got under way.

Cinderford seemed to sit back on their laurels for a period as Tewkesbury scored twice to bring back the score to 20 points to 10.  With forward pressure being exerted by Cinderford, Jack Worgan popped a pass to Ben ‘Chunky’ Jones to crash over.  Tewkesbury scored again before Jack Worgan sprinted to the line to score his second try of the game and close out the scoring.  Cinderford ran out winners by 30 points to 15.

During the game wingers Edwin Mathieson, Max Skipsey and Lewis Handley made some great runs with Edwin being denied twice, being barged in to touch as he made for the corner.

The second game was a closer affair with Tewkesbury wining by 25 points to 20.  Tewkesbury went quickly into a 15 point to nil lead as Cinderfords defence let them down on three occasions.   However, Cinderford kept themselves in touching distance getting back to within ten points by half time.  Cinderford scored two tries through fly half Harry Taylor and hooker Scott Hodder.

Some changes were made at half time, and Cinderford got to within five points as Jack Worgan pick up a loose ball in open play and crashed through.  Mid way through the half Caleb Whitmore made stunning break from the front of a lineout running a good 30 metres before being pushed into touch, an illegal move not called by the referee.  The laws of the game state that proper tackles must be attempted.  Tewkesbury scored again then Scott Hodder scored his second in reply for the final score of the match.

Squad: Cinderford Squad: Fenn Edwards, Harrison Peates, Edwin Mathieson, Harry Jones, Caleb Whitmore, Scott Hodder, Jack Worgan, Lydia Handley, Harry Taylor, Riley Baldwin, Lewis Handley, Max Skipsey, Ben ‘Chunky’ Jones

On Sunday18 October 09, Cinderford under 9’s went to play their counterparts at Lydney.  Two matches were played  with Cinderford winning the first game and Lydney the second.

The first ten minutes of the first game saw both sides tentatively probe one another’s defences.  Lydney came close to scoring the first try, but for a fine double tackle from Cinderfords Jack Worgan and Harry Jones.  Cinderford opened the scoring when Jack Worgan skipped through a number of tackles in a run of 25 metres, scoring in the corner.

Harry Taylor left the field when he bumped his knee to be replaced by Lewis Mason.  Pressure from Lydney was turned over in the Cinderford half and with 40 metres to go, Harry Jones out paced the Lydney defenders to give Cinderford a 10 points to nil lead at half time.  Worthy of a mention for some storming runs are Caleb Whitmore and Emily Dalrymple, and for some fine tackling Michael Saunders and William Salter.

After the break, with Cinderford making six changes, Lydney caught Cinderford cold and levelled the score with two quick tries.  However, a Cinderford came more into the game, Jack Worgans break saw him scamper to the line to score his second try.  Final score 15 points to 10 in Cinderfords favour.

The second match was a tougher encounter with defences coming to the fore.  Lydney scored two tries in the first half to make it 10 points to 0 at half time.

Cinderford pressed hard in the second half, spending long spells within 10 metres of the Lydney line.  Lydneys defence stood strong and the final score stood 10 points to nil to Lydney.  Lydia Handley, Lewis Mason and Max Skipsey all played well.

Cinderford Squad: Fenn Edwards, Harrison Peates, Emily Dalrymple, Edwin Mathieson, Harry Jones, Caleb Whitmore, Scott Hodder, Jack Worgan, Lydia Handley, William Salter, Harry Taylor, Riley Baldwin, Lewis Mason, Lewis Handley, Michael Saunders, Max Skipsey
